851,259. Explosive devices. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E.I. Feb. 24, 1959 [March 18, 1958]. No. 6415/59. Class 9(1). An explosive device adapted to produce a plane detonation wave front comprises a mass of explosive in which are embedded, in close contact one with another, spherical inert barriers of uniform size such.that a detonation wave can travel from the initiation point through the interstices between the barriers without propagation through the barriers, the shortest paths through the interstices from the initiation point to the remotest surface of the charge being substantially equal in length. The charge is preferably a square pyramid of high explosive E such as PETN, RDX, HMX, pentolite, cyclotol or tetrytol with an electric blasting cap at the apex P 0 . The barriers B may be made of lead, rubber, plastic, glass and wood and their size is determined by the explosive used and the effect required as well as by the material used to make the barriers. To prepare the charge, the barriers may be stacked in a mould and heated prior to pouring molten explosive into the mould. Specification 637,332 is referred to.
