PURPOSE:To provide a magnetic recording medium having high output in lower and higher frequency bands and improved characteristics especially in a shorter wavelength range by orienting magnetic powder having uniaxial anisotropy contained in a magnetic layer so that the direction of easy magnetization becomes a specified direction. CONSTITUTION:Magnetic powder having uniaxial anisotropy contained in a magnetic layer is oriented so that the direction of easy magnetization becomes a direction tilted at <45 deg. angle from the longitudinal direction of the magnetic layer to the vertical direction. When the tilt angle of the direction of easy magnetization is <45 deg., the output in a lower frequency band is hardly affected by reduction of the magnetizable component in the longitudinal direction, and the characteristics in a shorter wavelength range are remarkably improved by a given vertically magnetizable component. A magnetic coating material contg. magnetic powder having uniaxial anisotropy is coated on a substrate, and a magnetic field is applied to the resulting magnetic layer in a proper direction before drying the layer by tilting N-N confronting magnets at <45 deg. angle from the longitudinal direction of the layer to the vertical direction. The orientation of magnetic powder having uniaxial anisotropy is achieved in such a way as stated above. |
