The feeding procedure involves the passage of the feed through a valve into a branch pipe. The valve then closes and a piston moves along the branch pipe past the inlet pipe and pushes the feed through the opened outlet valve. The piston then returns and the process is repeated. The material is pushed forward by piston (2) from the hopper (1) through the feed valve (4) into the branch pipe. Valve (4) then closes and piston descends to the position shown by the broken line at 20' at the outlet valve (12).
