PURPOSE:To monitor a picture and to improve the operability of a reading device without adding an optical system for monitoring by displaying a picture having required lines including lines which are being read at present out of picture data read by a linear solid state image pickup device on a liquid crystal panel on the case. CONSTITUTION:A timing pulse generator 3, reading window 4, lens array 5, light emission diode 6 and a fixed image pickup element 7 are provided in the case 2 of a manual scanning type reading device that scans original 1, and a liquid crystal panel 8 is placed on the upper part of the case 2. Picture data read by the element 7 is added to an electronic circuit 9 and processed by a sample hold circuit, binary coding circuit, S-P converter, main CPU, sub CPU etc. of the circuit 9. Out of read picture data, a picture having required lines including lines read at present is displayed on the panel 8 on the case 2. Thus, the operability of reading device can be improved without adding a new optical system for monitoring.
