PURPOSE:To obtain a low-density ethylene copolymer in a well-dispersed slurry state by the action of a high polymerization activity catalyst, by copolymerizing ethylene with an alpha-olefin in the presence of a specified catalyst in a hydrocarbon medium under a slurry polymerization condition. CONSTITUTION:In producing an ethylene copolymer of a density of below 0.91g/ cc by copolymerizing ethylene with a 3 C or higher alpha-olefin in a hydrocarbon medium in the presence of a catalyst comprising an Mg and Ti-containing, hydrocarbon-insoluble solid catalyst component and an organoaluminum compound cocatalyst component under a slurry polymerization condition; said hydrocarbon- insoluble solid catalyst component is one which can be obtained by reacting a Ti compound of formula II (wherein R<2> is alkyl, aryl, or the like, and l is 0-4) with a compound of formula III (wherein R<3> is the same as R<2> and m is 0-2) in the presence of the reaction product between a silicon chloride of formula (wherein R<1> is the same as R<2> and n is 1-4) and a Grignard reagent. In the preparation of this catalyst component, the atomic ratio of the Mg atoms in the Grignard reagent which is reacted with the silicon chloride to the Ti atoms in the Ti compound is at least 5.
