PURPOSE:To obtain a catalyst having high metal resistance and developing excellent catalytic capacity, by combining crystalline aluminosilicate zeolite, an alumina/magnesia matrix and the magnesia in said matrix. CONSTITUTION:3-40wt% (on the basis of a whole catalyst) of crystalline aluminosilicate and 60-90wt% of an alumina/magnesia matrix are contained and the magnesia content in the alumina/magnesia matrix is adjusted to 2-50wt%. This catalyst is used as a catalytic cracking catalyst having such high metal resistance that the production amounts of hydrogen and coke can be suppressed without reducing the yields of gasoline and an intermediate distillate fraction in cracking heavy oil containing 0.5ppm or more of heavy metals such as nickel, vanadium or iron. In addition, in the same way as a conventional hydrocarbon converting catalyst, it can be effectively used in the catalytic cracking, the hydrocraking, the alkylation, the polymerization, the hydro-demetallization and the isomerization of usual hydrocarbon or the disproportionation of toluene.
