PURPOSE:To enhance the mechanical strength of the end surface of a carrier, by filling the communication parts, surrounded by three-dimensional reticulated skeletals of the wall part except the passages of the end surface having passages opened thereto, with a ceramic material to form an end surface reinforced layer. CONSTITUTION:A carrier 1 is constituted of a porous ceramic carrier 1 having a columnar shape comprising a cordierite type ceramic material and three- dimensional reticulated skeletals 6. In the wall parts 8 except the opening parts of the passages 2, 3 of both end surfaces of the carrier 1, communication parts 7 formed so as to be surrounded by the three-dimensional reticulated skeletals 6 are filled with a ceramic material to form end surface reinforced layers 5 each having a dense structure. When exhaust gas containing particulates is introduced into the carrier from the inlet passages 2, the exhaust gas is passed through the communication parts 7 surrounded by the reticulated skeletals of partition walls 4 and issued to the outlet passages 3. The particulates are collided with the surfaces of the skeletals 6 and collected. |
