[Also in Group XXII] A method of sealing an electrical lead 3 into the envelope 1 of a semi-conductor device includes the steps of sealing a metal tube 4 into an aperture in the envelope, passing the lead through the tube, and pressing the tube into contact with the lead along a substantial part of the length of the tube by rotary swaging. The envelope and the tube may be of mild steel or nickel-iron alloy, and the tube may be sealed into the envelope by a glassto-metal seal 5. As described, in the rotary swaging step, the tube surrounding the lead is placed between semicylindrical grooves in the opposed faces of two dies which are located between guides which, with the dies, are rotated within a cylindrical housing around the inner wall of which an even number of rollers are uniformly distributed, so that the tube is pressed around the lead by substantially equal radial pressures in all directions, the pressure being sufficient to deform the lead as well as the tube. Finally, the swaged joint may be strengthened by dip soldering.</p>
