860,156. Plate type heat exchangers. RICHARDS, J. M., GETHIN, W. H., and MILLINGTON, R. G. March 4, 1959 [March 5, 1958], No. 7037/58. Class 64(3) A heat exchanger comprises an assembly of strips 1 of a metal such as aluminium, each strip being of channel section with flanged edges 9 (Fig. 3) and the ends 3 of each strip being overturned in the manner shown in Fig. 2. The strips are assembled in abutment with adjacent strips facing in opposite directions (see Figs. 4 and 5) so that channels for two heat exchanging fluids are formed. The abutting ends 3 of the strips co-operate.to form header plates. The channel bases may have dimples 7 or be fluted, the dimples or flutes abutting in the assembly as shown in Fig. 5. Alternatively, in the case of an oil cooler, the oil passages which are formed by the co-operating channels of adjacent strips may have plane walls and thin corrugated strips are then disposed in these passages. The passages for the cooling fluid which may be air, are fitted with corrugated strips 15 (Fig. 4). The assembly may be dip-brazed. |
