PURPOSE:To prevent the damage and rot of bulbs and to enable the direct planting of bulbs, by coating a bulb with a solution obtained by adding a nonionic surface active agent to a polyvinyl alcohol having specific polymerization degree and saponification degree and dissolving the mixture to an aqueous solvent, and drying the applied solution. CONSTITUTION:100pts.wt. of a polyvinyl alcohol having a polymerization degree of 300-2,400 and saponification degree of 85-100mol% is mixed with 0.5- 25wt% of a nonionic surface active agent having an HLB value of 8-12 (e.g polyethylene glycol alkylphenyl ether), and the mixture is dissolved in an aqueous solvent such as water or a mixture of water and an organic solvent such as methanol, ethanol, etc. The obtained solution is applied to the surface of a bulb and dried to form a continuous coating film effective for the protection and preservation of the bulb. A continuous film having desired thickness can be formed easily by this process. The film has high strength and excellent moisture resistance and freshness-keeping capability, and the bulb covered with the film can be planted without removing the film.
