A crankcase (4) for multi-cylinder reciprocating piston internal combustion engines has walls (6) of relatively small thickness arranged transversely to the engine's longitudinal axis (5), in each of which a split bearing (7) is arranged. In order to avoid separately attached ribs whilst nevertheless obtaining sufficient reinforcement, each wall (6) has areas (8 or 8', 9 and 10 or 10') arranged offset in relation to one another in the direction of the engine's longitudinal axis (5), which are connected to one another by webs (11, 11'). In proximity to that bearing part (12) fixed to the wall, angular chambers (13, 14) are formed, in which helical vents (15) with through-holes (16) are arranged. <IMAGE>
