Prepn. of percarboxylic acids includes reacting hydroperoxide with water-soluble aliphatic carboxylic acid in a homegeneous lig. state, at 40-100≦̸C in the presesnce of a catalyst and a solvent. This forms a 50-75 wt. % azeotrope with respect to the total product. Then, water produced is continuously removed from the reaction zone to give percar-boxylic acids. The catlyst is selected from monmetallic oxides, such as oxides of selenium, tellurium, arsenic, antimony, bismuth, or boron, in an amt. of 0.001-0.1 moles per mole of hydroperoxide.
