Prepn. of percarboxylic acids includes reacting hydroperoxide with water-soluble aliphatic carboxylic acid in a homegeneous state, at 40-100≦̸C in the presesnce of a catalyst of 0.001-0.1 moles per mole of hydroperoxide and a solvent. This forms a 50-75 wt. % heterogeneous azeotrope with water, based on the total reaction prod. Water is continuously removed from the reaction zone by an azeotropic distillation, while giving percarboxylic acids. Used catalyst in ortho or meta boric acid.
