Two-stroke diesel engine with opposed free pistons

In the case of a two-stroke diesel engine with opposed free pistons 2 and hydraulic pump 3 the reciprocal movement of the free pistons with complete balancing of masses in each cylinder is converted into rotary motion by the hydraulic oil delivered by the hydraulic pump or pressurised water by means of a hydraulic motor and/or a free jet turbine. On the return of the free pistons, the acceleration is largely produced by the air compressed in the buffer chambers of the free pistons. Instead of the hydraulic piston connections previously indicated, compressed air piston connections are now proposed, because in this case the pressure losses and the acceleration pressures are lower and the ducts 15 between each two cylinders are smaller and simpler. For the high piston speeds, nozzle cone valves are proposed for the pressure valves 31 and the intake valves 32 of the hydraulic pump, which cone valves have a low pressure loss owing to a heavy reduction of the high cracking speed in the expanded nozzle behind the valve seat associated with an increase in pressure. Starting is by way of a starter injection pump 11 with two pump pistons and starter compressed air valve 12 so that each cylinder has a starter injection. <IMAGE>
