A filter unit and a process are described for the direct removal of solids, aerosols and pollutant gases from hot untreated gas by means of a plurality of filter chambers for receiving granular filter material, which can be fed in through, in each case, one upper feed opening and can be discharged through, in each case, one lower discharge opening having an unloading device, each chamber having an untreated gas inlet nozzle and a purified gas outlet nozzle and a transport device below the filter chambers, assigned to all filter chambers collectively, for the polluted filter material. For simplified construction and operation, and also to create a simpler possibility for the regeneration of the filter material, it is proposed that a plurality of filter chambers (13) are disposed adjacent to each other, that a further transport device (5, 6, 7, 14) for transport of the used filter material to an abrasion drum (8) is connected to the transport device (3), and that a further transport device (5, 10, 11) is connected to this drum for the return of the regenerated filter material to the feed openings (17) of the filter chambers (13). <IMAGE>
