In a vibrational-wave motor, a movable part in contact with a vibratory part is driven by a travelling vibrational wave, which is generated by the vibratory part by applying a periodic voltage to an electrostrictive element in contact with the vibratory part, the frequency of the periodic voltage being varied successively, the drive velocity of the movable part being measured at the respective frequency, the measured values being compared successively, a frequency being stored which produces the largest measured value, and the movable part being driven at the stored frequency by means of the periodic voltage.
