A separator for the pressure hydrogenation of carbonaceous solid or liquid substances, in particular coal, effecting a separation of the gas/vapour mixtures arising in the hydrogenation and a suspension and also the precipitation of the suspension, is characterised in that a) a part of the wall (4) on which the main quantity of the suspension is deposited, is kept free by one or more scrapers (7) and at least parts of the wall (4) stand upright, b) the separator has a cyclonic structure and c) the scraper(s) (7) assist or promote the motion of the suspension in the direction of the exit (8). <IMAGE>
