The invention relates to a detector for testing for gases and to the field of safety engineering. The object of the invention is to provide a detector with low power consumption which can test for gases by means of the change in the conductivity of semiconductor materials without having to heat the semiconductor material electrically and which consequently operates without long start-up processes and can be used universally. The essence of the invention is that the semiconductor material is placed in an ionised gas atmosphere and in an electric field in such a way that it is also a resistance element in an evaluation circuit and part of the arrangement for producing the electric field. Such detectors can be used for the continuous monitoring and early detection of flammable, explosive or toxic gases.
