The invention relates to an apparatus which prevents the carriage of an inclined hoist from falling downwards along the conductors which guide it in the event of breakage of the cable. For this purpose, a two-armed lever is articulated on the carriage. The cable and a spring engage on one end of the lever. If the cable breaks, the spring pivots the lever in such a manner that it engages by its other end in the rungs of the ladder and so checks the carriage. According to the invention, the lever is articulated on the lower end of the carriage. This has the advantage that the apparatus works satisfactorily even with inclinations in excess of 60 DEG .
