The invention relates to a hydraulic brake and steering brake system for motor vehicles having two main tandem cylinders (1, 2) which can be actuated by a pedal individually or together and have in each case one working chamber (7, 8) near to the pedal and one (9, 10) remote from the pedal. Wheel brakes (29, 30) of a vehicle axle which can be subjected to steering braking and a valve arrangement (33) which can be controlled by the main cylinder pressures are connected to two mutually corresponding working chambers (7, 8). In addition, wheel brakes (48, 49) of a wheel axle which can not be subjected to steering braking is connected to the valve arrangement (33). Normally blocked valve passages between the working chambers (7, 8), near to the pedal, of the main tandem cylinders and the wheel brakes (48, 49) of the vehicle axle which can not be subjected to steering braking can be controlled by means of the valve arrangement (33). With a view to a simple design of the valve arrangement (33) and a reduction in the sealing friction it is proposed that the working chambers (9, 10) which are remote from the pedal should be hydraulically connected to one another and to the control connection (39) of the valve arrangement (33), and that a wheel brake (29, 20) of the vehicle axle which can be subjected to steering braking should be connected to each working chamber (7, 8) which is near to the pedal. <IMAGE>
