A cooling device according to the cross-flow cooler principle is provided for optimum cooling of an electrical machine, in which cooling device the cooling pipes (1) which extend in the longitudinal direction of the machine are arranged in partial bundles (11) around the machine circumference in a housing which has an angular cross-section. In this case, the partial bundles (11) in the cross-section with respect to the machine longitudinal axis form a polygonal train which is in each case divided by solid ribs (10). The cooling pipes (1) are arranged offset in rows with respect to one another in the partial bundles (11). The inlet and outlet flow space (8) for the cross-flow cooler is located between the radically innermost cooling pipe row (16) and the machine sheath (15), while the space through which the flow passes is arranged between the radially outermost cooling pipe rows (14) and the outer housing wall (2). <IMAGE>
