Olefins having 2 to 4 carbon atoms are prepared by catalytic reaction of methanol and/or dimethyl ether at elevated temperature, a non-zeolite aluminosilicate having adsorptive properties, which has been impregnated with boric acid, being employed as the catalyst. Expediently, catalysts which consist of 5 to 70 % by weight of B2O3 are used. Crude methanol can be employed as the starting substance.
