According to the invention, the voltages detected on the terminal (+) and on the auxiliary terminal of the alternator are respectively regulated to a first and a second regulation value by means of a reference voltage generator (19) and of two detection circuits (20 and 21). Through an OR gate (24) said circuits control the conduction of a switch so as to supply the exciting coil (4) of the alternator. The protection against short-circuits is provided by an overcurrent detector (28) which makes the regulation voltages drop so as to block the switch (25) on a non-conducting state, if the current going through the switch (25) is higher than a reference threshold. The regulator may be used for the equipment of trucks.
