<p>Apparatus for rigging a halyard to a masthead sheave includes a carrier for ascending a masthead support member and a threader mounting a pair of coplanar sheaves journalled on shafts that are urged together by a resilient band. A hoisting line entrained about one of the sheaves is accessible from the base of the support member for rotating the sheaves to allow grasping and entraining a free end of the halyard about the masthead sheave. A similarly arranged hoisting line, depending from the carrier and accessible from the base, hoists the carrier and its threader up the support member to the masthead sheave. In one embodiment the carrier includes an idler sheave and a coplanar drive sheave for rollably gripping a wire stay of the support member. A carrier of a second embodiment is adapted to climb a tapered mast and discloses a closed frame, openable at one end for encircling the mast, having three friction wheels journaled on shafts that are urged together by a resilient cord for rollably gripping the mast.</p> |
