A roofing shingle of the solid variety marked for easy installation and a method of applying such solid shingles with overlapping joints. The solid shingle is made with a base of either a felt or a fiberglass material covered with asphalt and crushed mineral granules with its upper portion, approximately fifty-five percent of the shingle width, covered by the next higher row of shingles. Three linear marks are located on the upper portion each with a length substantially as long as the width of the upper portion to indicate the center line of the shingle and the one-third and two-third locations from each end. Two shorter linear marks, substantially two inches from the end of the shingle, are located on the upper portion to designate overlap.
