PURPOSE:To provide an FRM member imparted with high bending strength by providing a matrix metallic layer having a prescribed thickness on the side of a fiber-reinforced metal (FRM) where tensile stress is generated. CONSTITUTION:Alumina fibers as fibers and Al, etc. as a matrix metal are used in an FRM member. The alumina fibers are packed in a mold of an Al cylinder or the like and the mold is put in an impregnating tank contg. molten Al, and is pressed to impregnate the molten Al among the fibers and to weld the fibers, thereby uniting the fibers and the metal. The united body is removed from the molten metal and is cooled and is then subjected to prescribed machining. An FRM product 10 provided with a matrix layer 12 having a specified thickness in the part which is at least on the pulling side when subjected to bending load and the packed layer 14 dispersed uniformly with the fibers is thus formed.
