PURPOSE:To form firm metallic plating of high quality having superior adhesive strength on stainless steel by subjecting the steel to be plated to cathodic electrolysis in an aqueous soln. contg. hydrochloric acid and Sn ions at a specific concn. each. CONSTITUTION:Stainless steel to be plated is subjected to cathodic electrolysis in an aqueous soln. contg. >=0.8mol/l hydrochloric acid and >=0.001mol/l ions of one or more among Sn, In and Co to activate the surface of the stainless steel. The current density of the cathode is adjusted to about 3-50A/dm<2> during the electrolysis, and the electrolysis time is adjusted to about 3-180sec when electrolysis is carried out at ordinary temp.
