PURPOSE:To increase a recognition rate and also increase a recognition speed by providing a character recognition device with an indication key for indicating the kind of handwriting input unformation, and indicating the kind. CONSTITUTION:The kind (Chinese character, square form of Japanese syllabary, and cursive form of Japanese syllabary) of handwriting information is indicated by the indication key. When the information to be inputted is handwritten on the tablet 4 of an on-line handwriting input part 3, a character recognition control part 8 recognizes the handwriting input information by using information in a dictionary 9 according to the indicated information. The control part 8 sends out the recognized character code to a CPU10, which outputs the code to a character generator 11, displaying the character pattern on a display part 6.
