PURPOSE:To increase the recovery rate of carbonaceous substance by subjecting a coal/water slurry remaining after separation of high quality fuel coal and having a high ash content, to additional de-ashing in a 2nd-step de-ashing tower. CONSTITUTION:An oil having affinity for carbonaceous substances in coal is supplied from a tank 1 to an evaporator 3 through a pump 2 and vapor of produced oil is fed into the bottom of de-ashing towers 5-7 by means of a compressor 4. A slurry consisting of crushed coal, water and a frother is supplied from a tank 13 to a de-ashing tower 5 and froths of oil vapor atomized by an atomizer 8 and a motor 9 are introduced into the slurry via a baffle plate 10 for recovery of lipophilic carbonaceous substances at the top of the de-ashing tower 5. Coal/ water slurry with a high ash content remaining in the de-ashing tower 5 is passed through de-ashing towers 6, 7 for further de-ashing. EFFECT:Recovery rate of carbonaceous substance is increased to 95% or higher.
