PURPOSE:To simplify the structure of a holding tool and to omit the cumbersome change of setting by paper to be detected, by providing a body to be detected and a detector at the fixed part of the holding tool and at the movable part, which is changed together with a movable holding piece, and electrically detecting the position of the body to be detected by the detector. CONSTITUTION:A compressing mechanism 22 comprises the following parts: a first rod 23, which is fixed to a cylinder 21; a second rod 24, which is linked to a movable holding pieces 20b; and an elastic body 25, which is provided between the first rod 23 and the second rod 24 to separate the rods. When the first rod 23 is compressed by the cylinder 21, the distance between the fixed holding piece 20a and a movable holding piece 20b is approximately maintained at a thickness of paper held by the pieces by the elastic body 25. A body to be detected 26 is fixed to the second rod 25. A detector 27, which faces the body to be detected 26 is fixed to a holding tool 5a. The detector 27 geneates a signal in correspondence with the distance to the body to be detected 26. When the movable holding piece 20b is operated and the paper is held together with the fixed holding piece 20a, the detector 27 generates the signal corresponding to the paper thickness.
