METHOD FOR INSPECTING NUCLEAR FUEL PELLETS

Nuclear reactor fuel pellets are optically scanned to detect surface flaws. A beam of light is directed onto successive elemental surface areas of the pellets and the reflexed light is monitored. The site and shape of each flaw is determined, and the date is sent to device having a corresponding flaw quality index. The indexes obtained from flaws over whole surface are totaled to give a surface quality index allowing evaluation of pellet quality.
