The contact system for a vacuum arc extinguishing chamber contains two disc-like contacts (1, 2). At least one of these contacts (1, 2) has an arc extinguishing electrode (3) which surrounds the contact- making element (4) which projects beyond the surface of the arc extinguishing electrode. The radius of the contact-making element (4) is less than the radius of the arc extinguishing electrode (3). The arc extinguishing electrode (3) is designed with grooves (9) which are curved tangentially in the peripheral region and run under the contact-making element (4). The contact-making element (4) has grooves (8) whose outer ends (11) coincide with the ends (12) of the part (10) of the grooves (9) of the arc extinguishing electrodes (3) running under the contact-making element (4). The length of each section (15) without a groove, on the side surface of the contact-making element (4), which section coincides with the grooves (9) and the boundaries of the grooves (9) of the arc extinguishing electrode (3), is less than 1.5 times the width of the groove (9). <IMAGE>
