Process for liquefying lignite

A further development in the two-stage hydrogenolysis of lignite in the form of a suspension, which is prepared by adding a solvent and a catalyst to the lignite, is described. The suspension solvent used in the improved lignite liquefaction process is a solvent which is suitable for a high-performance hydrogenation, in particular a middle distillate oil and/or a heavy distillate oil, which is, inter alia, obtained in the particular hydrogenolysis stage. In this way, the hydroliquefaction efficiency is improved and naphtha fractions and other oil fractions are recovered in good yields.
