In a known apparatus for preparation of thin sections, figure 2, one utilises the circular end surface 11' of a grinding disk with diamond powder, against which one moves a specimen holder 21 arranged on a swivel arm 31' in a swivelling motion. The specimen holder 21 carries a plane parallel glass plate 2 with exactly known thickness, which in turn carries the initial stage of the thin section 10. One checks until the desired thickness is achieved by knowing precisely the thickness of the glass plate and measuring from the back side of the glass plate to the grinding surface on the specimen body. The apparatus according to the invention makes it possible to use plane parallel glass plates whose thickness does not need to be known with any special accuracy. The grinding surface of this apparatus is the cylindrical part of a grinding roll 11, which is eccentrically mounted in rim rings 12 with larger diameter than the grinding roll 11, figure 3. An arm system 31 provides for rectilinear movement forward and back, perpendicular to the plane of the paper in figure 3. As the arm system 31 gradually presses against the grinding roll 11, the grinding proceeds until the glass plate 2 strikes the rim rings 12. The radial distance between the rim rings 12 and the grinding roll 11 corresponds to the desired thickness of the thin section 10. This quantity can be varied by means of an eccentric mechanism. <IMAGE>
