PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic recording medium which has an axis of easy magnetization in the vertical direction of a magnetic field and superior magnetic characteristics of residual magnetism and coercive force by forming a continuous magnetic film principally of iron oxide as the magnetic film, and setting the ratio Mv/Mh of residual magnetism Mh in the in-face direction of the magnetic film and residual magnetism Mv in the vertical direction above a specific value. CONSTITUTION:The magnetic moment of the medium rises vertically at about 30 deg. from a film surface to obtain an effect on vertical magnetic recording when the ratio (Mv/Mh) of the residual magnetism (Mh) in the in-face direction of the magnetic film and residual magnetism (Mv) before the effect of a diamagnetic field originating from the vertical shape of the magnetic film is corrected is >=0.5. Preferably, Mv/Mh>1. When a magnetic material is adhered onto a base body, a method of scattering atoms constituting the magnetic film in a vacuum chamber, etc., are employed.
