A control device for the mixture composition of an internal combustion engine operated with gaseous fuel is proposed in which the output signal of a single oxygen probe which has an increment in the range of lambda = 1 and a constant signal response in at least one of the marginal ranges is evaluated, according to the operating state of the internal combustion engine in the incremental range ( lambda = 1) or in the constant signal range ( lambda > < 1) for controlling the air-gas mixture. Various control concepts can be realised using this device, it being possible, in particular, to switch between the two control concepts with adjustment to minimum pollutant emission or adjustment to minimum fuel consumption as a function of operating parameters of the internal combustion engine. For the adjustment to minimum pollutant emission, the incremental response of the lambda probe for lambda = 1 is used, whereas for the adjustment to minimum fuel consumption a constant adjustment on the lean-branch of the characteristic curve of the lambda probe is performed for lambda in the range 1.2 </= lambda </= 1.8. <IMAGE>
