The invention relates to a method and apparatus for determining the temperature distribution along a length, for example a steam pipe 3. Parallel and next to the steam pipe 3, there is a pipe 4 which is filled with air and has a pump 6 and a sensor 7 arranged at its ends. In the interior of the pipe 4, a hollow polyethylene line 5 filled with butane gas is arranged. If, due to a leak, steam issues from the steam pipe 3 and this steam heats the hollow line 5, butane gas diffuses at that point from the hollow line 5 into the pipe 4. By means of the pump 6, the column of the air with the butane gas which has diffused in is moved at intervals past the sensor 7 which is sensitive to butane gas, whereupon the temperature distribution can be detected on the connected indicator instrument 8. From the time of arrival and the quantity of the gas, the magnitude and location of the leak can be determined. <IMAGE>
