The long-lived noble fission gas krypton 85, which has a half-life of 10.76 a, is found during nuclear reactions. An unrestricted release of the isotope krypton 85 would lead to its long-term enrichment in the atmosphere and increase the radiative load on the population. The radioactive decay would, on the other hand, require long storage periods. It is the object of the invention to develop a method for environmentally friendly removal of the isotope krypton 85 by means of which the radiative load is diminished and the necessary expenditure is reduced. For this purpose, the Kr 85 is brought by nuclear excitation from its ground state with the half-life of 10.76 a to its excited state, from which point the transition to the stable nuclide rubidium 85 takes place with a half-life of 4.48 h.
