The invention relates to a thermal engine, described by Malone in 1931, which executes a Stirling process, with the difference that a fluid is used as the operating medium instead of a gas and a thermodynamic pile, introduced by Malone, is used instead of a regenerator. According to the invention, special structural shapes and thermodynamic pile valves and valve control devices are described, which, in conjunction with heat exchangers equipped according to the invention, facilitate a compact structural shape and a low flow resistance. This increases the specific power (power/mass) of the thermal engine. A compact structural shape with a magnetic drive of the thermodynamic pile is described, which permits use as a water pump in constricted drilled holes.
