For a device for managing the storage space of magnetic discs, comprising a disc drive, a disc controller and a control processor (microprocessor) with direct memory access and input/output units, it is proposed to provide an associative memory with byte-parallel operation, which can be expanded in modular manner and in which the entire information of at least one disc track can be transferred and processed. Using this device, the entire disc status information can be transferred for access optimisation and/or the data of all files can be transferred for content-related search and modification, from the magnetic disc and processed within a very short time.
