The phytobiological clarification plant with reversal of flow is a filter body with flow-through from below, on which specific plants (E) which are responsible for the purification of the waste water are employed. The incorporation of a horizontal barrier layer below the root space, which can consist of a semipermeable fabric (B), converts the vertical flows into horizontal flows. This prevents short-circuiting currents, and the residence time in the system and the purification effect can be calculated. The clarification plant designed in this way does not depend on outside energy and is outstandingly suitable for decentralised purification of waste water from individual residences, individual production units, hotels, holiday homes and can also be employed as fourth purification stage in municipal clarification plants. <IMAGE>
