This invention relates to a process for the generation of microbial cells and is characterised by the fact that a bacterium belonging to species selected from the group of Flavobacterium tosaensis, Pseudomonas wakayamaensis, Flavobacterium methanolicola, Pseudomonas kyotoensis, Pseudomonas aichiensis and Corynebacterium yamanasiensis, which have been discovered, is cultivated in a culture medium which contains methanol as the main carbon source, and the resulting microbial cells are obtained from the nutrient broth. It is possible by the process of the invention to obtain bacterial cells in large amounts and good yield from the abovementioned bacterial species using methanol, which is supplied in excess by the chemical industry, as main carbon source. Since these bacterial cells contain many proteins, they can be used as human and animal foodstuffs, materials for pharmaceuticals and industrial materials.
