PURPOSE:To obtain a single cystal of artificial iolite useful as a jewel material, by adding a specific solvent to selected raw material substances showing an iolite composition, heating them, arranging SiO2 in the vicinity of the liquid level of formed molten salt. CONSTITUTION:MgO, Al2O3 and SiO2 showing a composition ratio almost the same as iolite are blended with iron oxide as a colorant to give raw material substances, to which one or more of V2O5, molybdate, Li2O, and tungstate as a solvent are added, and they are heated to give a molten salt. A seed crystal of iolite is added to the molten salt to grow a single crystal of iolite. In the operation, SiO2, one of the raw materials, is separated from the other raw materials, arranged near the liquid level of the molten salt, and a dissolution amount of SiO2 is controlled. Consequently, the growing speed is controlled, and a single crystal of artificial iolite comparable with natural iolite can be obtained. |
