PURPOSE:To prepare yellow corundum inexpensively, by blending Al2O3 with FeO or Fe2O3 as a colorant to give a raw material, molding and sintering it to give a raw material rod, synthesizing a crystal from the raw material rod and a seed crystal such as corundum crystal, etc. using floating zone melting process. CONSTITUTION:Al2O3 as a raw material is blended with 0.2-0.8wt% FeO or 0.1-0.4wt% Fe2O3 as a colorant to give a corundum raw material, which is molded into a rod by rubber-press method, and sintered at 1,200-1,700 deg.C to give a raw material rod. A corundum crystal or sintered corundum is used as a seed crystal. The raw material rod 3 and the seed crystal 4, respectively, are supported by the top and the bottom shafts 5 and 6, arranged in the quartz tube 7 of a single crysal production unit of concentrated infrared heating, infrared rays of the halogen lamp 2 are collected on the elliptic mirror 1, the raw material rod 3 is melted, and melt is formed between it and the seed crystal 4. In this state the top and bottom shafts 5 and 6 are simultaneously lowered, and crystal is formed, to give yellow corundum. |
