PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a raw material for heat-resistant resins, etc. in high purity, by reacting crude m-dinitrobenzene containing isomers with a lower alcohol in the presence of a basic compound, hydrogenating the reaction mixture, and distilling and separating the hydrogenated reaction mixture. CONSTITUTION:Crude m-dinitrobenzene containing o- and p-dinitrobenzene is reacted with a lower alcohol, preferably 1-3C aliphatic monohydric alcohol in the presence of a basic compound, e.g. NaOH, to convert substantially only the o- and p-dinitrobenzene selectively into the corresponding alkoxynitrobenzenes. The resultant reaction mixture without separating the m-dinitrobenzene is directly hydrogenated and distilled to separate the aimed m-phenylenediamine. A great difference in boiling points between the m-phenylenediamine and o- and p-methoxyaniline permits very economical separation and purification. |
