The central hub plate (4) is secured to the wheel via the wheel studs and has radial guide arms with sleeves (8) to take radially moving arms with curved over ends (5) to lie over the tread. The inner ends of the sliding arms are linked to the hub plate by separate springs. The grip aid is removed from the wheel by unclipping the springs and pulling the sliding arms out. The hubplate can remain fixed to the wheel. The arms are rapidly replaced as required, without having to lift the wheel.
