PURPOSE:To reduce the mercury content in a negative electrode and suppress the generation of gas and then improve the characteristics of a battery by specifying the mercury content of zinc alloy powder within a preset range and providing the negative electrode in which the powder is diffused in a specific amount of electlyte. CONSTITUTION:The mercury content in zinc alloy powder containing two kinds or more of gallium, indium, and thallium and mercury is set to 2% or less and 0.05% or more in comparison with zinc and a negative electrode 4 in which this zinc alloy powder is diffused in an electrolyte of 150 to 500% in the alkaline electrolyte content which fully fills the gap between particles in the natural accumulation state is provided. For example, the said zinc alloy powder is obtained by putting every preset amount of two kinds or more of gallium, indium, and thallium in melted zinc and agitating, mixing, and alloying them. For amalgamation, while the alloy powder is being agitated in a weak alkaline aqueous solution, metal mercury is injected in the solution and then they are washed by water and are pressure-reduced and dried at approximately 60 deg.C. As a result, the generation of gas in an alkaline electrolyte can substantially be prevented and, as compared with a conventional batter containing mercury of 5 to 10%, the same battery characteristics can be obtained even if the mercury content is sharply reduced. |
