Semi-automatic carried or self-propelled machine comprising a variable number of planting means matched to the desired spread of the planting rows, which means are actuated by a mechanically controlled system from a roller 2 resting on the ground or by a motor 3 appended to the chassis 1 driving the roller, which provides the movement of the machine, its trajectory and its rotation for coming back to the planting line at each end of the rows. The planting means consist of sub-assemblies each comprising a grasping gripper tilting from a horizontal position for taking up the root ball to a vertical position for depositing it on the ground, the root balls being stored in a vertical store 17. The planting means are actuated by a slide 23 moving with reciprocating translation under the action of a connecting rod 12 connected to a frame 10 which can move in alternate rotation by virtue of a connecting rod/crank assembly 11. The invention applies to the planting in a greenhouse or in the open field, of all plants, shrubs, vegetables, flowers. <IMAGE>
