A light table is proposed by means of which transparent illumination, especially of large-format maps 5, is possible. If the map 5 is placed on the light table in the folded state, for example to prevent parts of the map from projecting beyond the light table, then when transparent illumination is applied all the information printed on the map can be seen, that is to say including the information on the lower layers of map. To avoid this phenomenon, which makes viewing of the map more difficult, it is proposed that a spacer be formed, for example by means of a glass plate 13, between the topmost layer of the map which is to be observed and the lower layers, which avoids unwanted images from showing through. <IMAGE>
