As shade for greenhouses, or for small greenhouses inside or outside greenhouses, a covering or coating of the covering with a phototropic material is provided, which automatically changes the light-permeability of the covering or cover within wide limits, depending upon the insolation, thus reliably protects the plants from damage by direct insolation, with comparatively low installation and operating expenditure. By means of an exchangeable combination of phototropic and non-phototropic shells or layers, on the one hand optimum shade or optimum heat insulation, according to the season, can be achieved, as a result of which, in relation to known shade systems, the stepless transition of the light transfer takes place in an optimum manner, and on the other hand maximum conditions for photosynthesis are produced. Problems of greenhouse ventilation by conventional shade systems are eliminated.
